Subrosa
We are an organisation passionate about all things words and books. From articles and blogs to opportunities to learn new words and some history, our website aims to provide you with an outlet to express your passion for literature.
‘Sub Rosa ’ is derived from Latin and literally means ‘under the rose’. The rose has an ancient history as a symbol of secrecy, from the use of a rose suspended from the ceiling of the council chamber during meetings to symbolise the sworn confidence of the participants.
This use of the rose is based on the Greek myth that Aphrodite (Latin - Venus) gave a rose to her son Eros (Latin - Cupid); Eros then gave the rose to Harpocrates, the god of silence and secrets, to ensure that Aphrodite’s dalliances remained hidden.
As such, our website is a meeting place to discover all the secrets of the literary world!
If you have a verve for words, are passionate about aposiopesis, or baffled by bathos, our website will offer an outlet for you to express your interests and enhance your learning.
Our website acts as a secret library, housing words, facts and knowledge surrounding all things literature and philosophy.
Weekly articles are posted, detailing various pieces of literature that have been read. The themes, characters, language and context are analysed, aiding your reading of the books. Different interpretations are considered and compared, helping to show the multitude readings one book can have. Various philosophical essays are also available to engage critical thinking skills and as a means of understanding the world.
Words are vital for life; they enable us to communicate, understand and sympathise with others, those before us and the world around us. New words to add to your vocabulary, and aid your understanding of the world, are posted daily, offering the opportunity to connect and communicate better.
The evolution of life has been documented throughout history. There are innumerable connections between each aspect of life that work much like a complex system. These connections can be seen through the history of literature - how it links into religion, science, art, maths. This section aims to show you how the history of literature pioneers the future.
Different works of literature can be characterised by what movement they are a part of. From absurdism, to kitchen sink realism to neoclassicism, literature shows the universal experience of existence and human condition, no matter the time period. The transcendental nature of literature is highlighted through the cyclicality of movements and their influence on those to come. This section will give you facts and books relating to each movement.
Hi, my name is Amelia! I am a Year 13 student studying A-Level English Literature, Classical Civilisation, Mathematics, and doing the EPQ. I love all things Literature and Philosophy, with a particular interest in Victorian Literature, Existentialism, and Absurdism. The idea for The Subrosa Library came about as I was in the midst of my GCSEs; since then, I have set up the website and written the content, with more on the way! I hope you enjoy.
